About This Place

Nestled in the heart of New York’s Greenwich Village, South of the Clouds 云之南 is a true gem for lovers of authentic Yunnan-style Chinese noodles and regional delicacies. This vibrant restaurant transports diners to the misty mountains and fragrant spice markets of Yunnan Province with every dish, offering a culinary experience that is both deeply rooted in tradition and invigoratingly fresh.

The menu is a carefully curated showcase of Yunnan’s diverse flavors and textures. Signature dishes like the 汽锅鸡 (Steamed Pot Chicken Soup) reveal the chef’s devotion to authentic techniques — this delicacy is patiently steamed for 35 hours in a traditional clay pot, concentrating every drop of chicken essence into a nourishing, aromatic broth. Customers rave about savoring the broth first before enjoying the tender chicken meat, a soulful ritual that comforts both body and mind.

The famed 雲南过桥米线 (Yunnan Crossing Bridge Noodle Soup) stands out with its silky rice noodles swimming in a rich, layered broth, offering an umami-packed depth that fans say feels “crafted, not rushed.” Likewise, the 干拌米线 (Dry Mixed Rice Noodles) selections — especially the spicy 红三剁米线, a vibrant interplay of minced pork, tomato, and fresh chilies — evoke a nostalgic journey through Yunnan’s culinary heritage.

Beyond noodles, the menu boasts a range of textured delights: the tender 五香卤牛腱 (Braised Beef Shank), the flavorful and bold 滇行牙签肉 (Beef on Sticks), and the crispy, satisfying Tofu Pudding Rice Noodle Dry Crispy Fried Pork. Desserts provide a sweet finish that’s both delicate and exotic, with options like the fragrant 玫桂椰香紫米 (Rose Osmanthus Coconut Flavor Purple Rice) and the silky smooth 玫瑰甜豆花 (Sweet Tofu Pudding With Rose), making each meal a complete sensory journey.

The dining atmosphere at South of the Clouds complements the culinary adventure beautifully. Warm, intimate lighting and tastefully minimal decor create a welcoming ambiance that feels both cozy and refined — perfect for dinners with friends or a quiet meal seeking comfort and warmth. Reviewers frequently mention the attentive and friendly service, adding to the overall feeling of genuine hospitality.

Longtime visitors appreciate how each visit offers new tastes to explore without sacrificing authenticity. One enthusiastic diner shared their love for multiple dishes from braised beef shank to fried milk rolls, praising the balance of flavors and textures. Another highlights the “springy rice noodles” and “layered aromatics” that make the broth so soul-soothing, especially during cold weather.

Whether you’re craving a hearty bowl of chicken soup packed with herbal depth, the vibrant heat of chili beef tripe, or a subtle floral dessert to finish, South of the Clouds is a must-visit sanctuary for Yunnan cuisine seekers in New York City. It’s a place where every bite tells a story — steeped in tradition, lovingly prepared, and served with warmth.

Update: Second visit. It’s my second time here, and it was just as good as the first! A real feast of Yunnan flavors — we tried a bit of everything: braised beef shank, truffle fried rice, boiled beef rice noodle soup, handmade coconut jelly, fried milk rolls, and osmanthus coconut purple rice. My favorites are definitely the truffle fried rice, fried milk rolls, and the mango rosemary drink. Such a cozy spot for comfort food with an exotic twist. Highly recommend! • We had our first experience with traditional Yunnan-style cuisine, and it was fantastic! The restaurant specializes in this regional cuisine, and we really enjoyed trying something new. One of the standout dishes was the chef’s special, Steamed Pot Chicken Soup. It was rich, comforting, and perfect for a cold day—great for sharing, too. For appetizers, we had the Crispy Fried Pork and Beef on Sticks, both flavorful and cooked perfectly. The beef noodles were also a highlight, packed with great taste and texture. To finish, we tried the Handmade Coconut Jelly, which was light, refreshing, and the perfect way to end the meal. If you’re looking for authentic Yunnan cuisine, this place is a must-try! We’ll definitely be back.

Had the best dinner with the girls — everything was delicious and the service was super attentive! Ft. Signature Yunnan Crossing Bridge with silky noodles and rich broth, Black Truffle Fried Rice (our fav!) good balance of eggs and truffle, Stir-Fried Rice Noodles with the perfect spice, Chili Beef Tripe that’s bold and flavorful, and a refreshing Cucumber Salad. Drinks like Shine Muscat, Green Grape & Lychee Apple Rose were light, not too sweet, and paired perfectly with the meal.

Yunnan comfort at its best—springy rice noodles, layered aromatics, and a broth that actually tastes crafted, not rushed. @sotc_nyc is a solid pick for anyone chasing regional depth. I love the herbal chicken broth that was cooked for several hours, packed with so much flavor and nutrients. This is the perfect soul-soothing soup for my immune booster. Rice with minced pork pepper & chili was excellent ! Beef Yunnan Crossing Bridge is also another of my fave. Overall, @sotc_nyc gave me an impressive opinion of Yunnan food. The broth was very clean and herbal. It was a very nice choice for the cold winter. The decor was cute and love the warm lighting. The beef was very tender. The pot noodle is flavor and contains many sources of protein. Flavor broth for the pot noodle

Authentic Yunnan cuisine. Every dish was delicious and flavorful. The dry stir-fry beef was the best - the fresh mint added a distinctive flavor. The portions were on the smaller side but as a result we got to try more dishes. Will come back.
